SUP Day – MICHIGAN CANOE RACING ASSOCIATION RACES

The Soo Ultimate Paddle (SUP) Day committee is excited to offer Michigan Canoe Racing Association’s newest C-1 and C-2 Expert I & II sanctioned races. And, only the seconded race offered in the Upper Peninsula. While racing, you have the excitement of seeing the Great Lakes lake freighters up close and personal. You will enjoy all the beauty that the upper peninsula has to offer while racing down the St. Mary’s River. There is so much to see and do in Sault Ste. Marie, that you will want to make a weekend of your time here.

Portaging Portage MCRA Sanctioned C-2 Race Expert I & Expert II

Registration: 7:00 am at Bird’s Eye Outfitters, 107 E. Portage Street
Race Start-time: 8:30 am – Bird’s Eye Outfitters

The scenic two-person canoe race is on the beautiful St. Mary’s River. Racers will start with a short portage from Bird’s Eye Outfitters to Kemp Marina. Racers will then enjoy a 13 mile course in the lower St. Mary’s River. The selected route does not cross the freighter lane but runs along the shore in shallower water. The waters are fairly sheltered and there will be USCG and Sheriff watercraft support.
Entry Fee: $25.00 Pre-register online. $35 – Register day of race (Checks payable to Chippewa County Community Foundation)
$1,500 purse will be available based on MCRA guidelines. MCRA rules will apply and all participants must have Coast Guard approved life jacket and sounding device.
Award Ceremony will be held at 5:00 pm on Rotary Island Park.

Chain of Islands MCRA Sanctioned C-1 Point Race

Registration: 1:00 pm – Rotary Island Park
Race Start-time: 2:30 pm – Rotary Island Park

This six-mile race course will start at Rotary Island Park and take racers on an upstream/downstream course through the St. Mary’s River Chain of Islands and back to Rotary Island Park. While paddling, racers will be up close (safe distance) with the Great Lakes lake freighters.
Entry Fee: $10 Pre-register online. $15 – Registration day of race (Checks payable to Chippewa County Community Foundation).
$500 purse will be available based on MCRA guidelines. MCRA rules will apply and all participants must have a Coast Guard approved life jacket and sounding device.
Award Ceremony will be held at 5:00 pm on Rotary Island Park.
